Moyne Templetuohy’s good run of form continued this afternoon after they recorded a two-point win over Moycarkey Borris in Round 1 of the County Intermediate Championship held in a sunny Templemore.
Moyne Templetuohy were quicker out of the blocks however, but two attacking opportunities resulted in two wides after 4 minutes. Both teams took their time to settle with both playing a fast tempo hand-passing game. Moycarkey’s attack focused around Anthony McKelvey who put the visitors a point up after 9minutes. Moyne Templetuohy responded well and from the resulting kickout found Niall Russell who pointed for our first score of the game. Both teams then traded points, but the moment of the half came from Brian Kelly who raced down on goal only to pull the ball across the face of the goal and trickle out wide. Two minutes later however Jason Bergin found himself racing down on goal and a neat pass to Tom Meade saw him finish nicely to the net to give Moyne Templetuohy a 1-01 to 0-02 lead after 17 mins. Moyne were now playing well but the final pass on occasions saw chances missed. Moyne finished strongly with both Jason Bergin and Tom Meade pointing to leave the score at half time Moyne Templetuohy 1-04 Moycarkey Borris 0-04. Game still very much in the melting pot.
No sooner had referee Tom Loughnane the ball thrown in to start the second half was a white flag raised. A super pass from Tommy Hassett found Tom Meade who put four between the teams. John Hassett added soon afterwards to stretch the lead to five with 40mins played. Moycarkey as expected bounced back scoring the next three scores to bring the game back to two points with 12 mins to go. Like Brian Kelly in the first half, Moycarkey saw a shot on goal rebound of the post mid-way through the half, had it gone in there would have been one between the teams. Moyne remained strong with man of the match Tom Meade scoring an all important free following a well worked move, to put three between the teams. With time almost up Moycarkey scored a free from the boot of Anthony McKelvey to leave two, with the time firmly in the hands of the referee. Things began to heat up as the clock ticked down but Moyne Templetuohy held on for a 1-07 to 0-08 victory.
Captain Tomas Hassett led from midfield with his distribution of the ball excellent. Both Tom Meade, Niall Russel and Jason Bergin worked well up front running at the Moycarkey defence causing all sorts of issues. In defence Thossie Hamill and Pierce Meade worked well with the Moycarkey onslaught. Their attention now turns to Thurles Sarsfield in the Mid Intermediate Hurling Championship Semi Final next weekend, where they hope their run of good form continues against age-old rivals Thurles Sarsfields.
